Our Technology

Blending elevated eye care + technology

OCT uses low-intensity infrared light to create high-resolution, 3D images of the layers at the back of your eye.

It works a bit like an MRI for your retina and optic nerve, capturing fine details in just seconds without any discomfort. This scan helps us detect early signs of glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and other retinal conditions before symptoms even appear.

Detailed testing for your peripheral vision

The HVA maps out how well you see in all areas of your visual field, from center to periphery. You’ll be asked to respond to lights appearing in different areas, which helps us detect blind spots or subtle changes that might otherwise go unnoticed.

This tool is especially helpful in diagnosing and monitoring glaucoma, but it can also reveal signs of neurological issues like optic nerve damage, brain tumours, or stroke. Tracking changes over time gives us important insight into your long-term vision health.

No dilation. No blur. No problem.

Our ultra-widefield Optos imaging system captures over 80% of your retina in a single scan compared to just 15% with traditional methods. It is quick, comfortable, and requires no stinging eye drops or recovery time.

This retinal imaging helps us detect early signs of retinal tears, diabetic changes, macular degeneration, and even systemic conditions like stroke or high blood pressure.

Precision mapping for custom eye care.

Our biometer and corneal topographer measure the shape and structure of your eye’s front surface. This data is essential for specialty contact lens fittings, myopia control, and pre-surgical consultations. It also helps monitor keratoconus and other corneal conditions with accuracy and confidence. We also offer pachymetry to measure corneal thickness with precision. It’s especially useful for glaucoma risk assessment, contact lens fittings, and LASIK evaluations.

Dr. Lauren Zaiffdeen, OD

Optometrist, Owner
Hello! I’m Lauren, I was born and raised in the Edmonton area and graduated from the University of Alberta with a BSc in Biological Sciences. I went on to earn my Doctor of Optometry degree from Nova Southeastern University in Florida. While there, I served as president of the Beta Sigma Kappa Honorary Society and received several awards recognizing my academic and clinical excellence, leadership skills, and commitment to community service. During my externships, I worked alongside prominent ophthalmologists to diagnose and manage ocular diseases, including cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration. In addition to ocular disease, I have a special interest in the areas of dry eye disease, digital eye strain, pediatrics, and corneal/contact lens technology. Promoting ocular health globally, I was actively involved in VOSH (Volunteering Optometric Services to Humanity) through my involvement with the Special Olympics and serving the underprivileged in Ecuador. After graduating, I returned home to Edmonton and have been fortunate to practice in a variety of optometric settings, which has fueled my desire to open The Monocle Optometry. I love getting to know my patients, treating them like family, and providing them with quality eye care and eyewear. I place importance on taking the time to educate and thoroughly answer all questions, so you have a fuller understanding of your vision and ocular health needs. During my free time, I enjoy spending quality time with my husband and 3 young sons. When I’m not cheering on my boys at their hockey and soccer games, you can find me enjoying the outdoors or scoping out the newest restaurants in town. I am very passionate about health and fitness, travelling, fashion, and interior design. • BSc, University of Alberta • Doctor of Optometry, Nova Southeastern University • Member of the Alberta Association of Optometrists • Member of the American Academy of Orthokeratology and Myopia Control • Corneal RGP and Scleral lens, practitioner

Dr. Kirsten Stayer, OD

Optometrist
Hi, I’m Kirstin! I’m a born and raised Albertan, originally from Red Deer, and I completed my Bachelor of Science in biological sciences at the University of Calgary while also competing on their varsity swim team. After university, I made the move to Oregon to pursue my degree in Optometry at Pacific University College of Optometry. During my time there, I was involved in several organizations, including a position on the board of Amigos Eyecare, a chapter of the global optometric outreach organization, VOSH (Volunteering Optometric Service to Humanity). I was also a member of the Beta Sigma Kappa Optometric Honours Society, where I took part in various community and academic initiatives. Over the course of my final year in school, I had the opportunity to complete multiple externships across the United States in a variety of settings, including rural communities, veterans hospitals, and busy urban surgical centres. These experiences allowed me to work alongside both Optometrists and Ophthalmologists who are leaders in their fields, exposing me to a wide variety of patient cases and experiences. I am passionate about managing ocular diseases, including diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts, and dry eye, as well as finding the ideal prescription for glasses and contact lenses for my patients. My goal is always to ensure all my patients walk out of the exam room with an improved knowledge about their eyes and with all their questions answered. In my free time, you can find me either cooking, trying new foods, heading out to the mountains to ski and hike, or spending time with friends and family. • BSc, University of Calgary • Doctor of Optometry, Pacific University College of Optometry
